Smith hit 64 of a possible 75 targets in the trap section at the prestigious international competition at Suhl, north-east of Frankfurt, on Tuesday.
She was among six competitors who shot 64, which initially had them ranked equal-fourth.
With the three pacesetters already qualified for semi-finals, Smith had to contest a shootoff to earn one of the remaining three spots.
But her aim was off as the stakes raised, leaving her agonisingly short of a chance to chase a medal.
American Emily Hampson shot 11/15 in the semi-finals and backed up with 13/15 in the gold-medal match to claim top honours.
