Daffy's a quack captain

HORSES swimming in Lady Bay are a Warrnambool icon - but what about a duck swimming on a horse swimming in Lady Bay?

Well, that pairing has occurred since “Daffy” the duck has taken to accompanying Tammy Good as she rows a boat towing racehorses in the bay.

Miss Good said the duck joined her on the morning rows about three weeks ago.

“For some reason it wanted to find a friend and it found the nature of rowing a comfort,” she said.

“As soon as he spots me, he flies into the boat or into the water nearby.

“Sometimes I put him in the boat and he stays there for a while.

“Sometimes he swims behind the horses and cruises on to their backs.

“That happens with Bill and Symon Wilde’s Hissing Sid. He’s a slow swimmer.”

The duck, a male Australian shelduck, has been christened Daffy, and is attracting admirers around the Warrnambool boat ramp and the Harbour Pavilion restaurant.

“Some people feed him on the boat ramp jetty,” Miss Good said.

“He also sits up there at the pavilion and oversees what is happening.”
