Runners battle wintry conditions in Warrnambool athletic series finale

THE final event of the Warrnambool Athletic Club winter series on Saturday lived up to its name.

More than 50 runners braved strong gusty winds and  rain for the six-kilometre handicap, which wrapped up another successful winter series.

Alison Wilson was the fastest female and Clinton Hall took out fastest male honours.

Young up-and-comer Tom Hynes was named club champion for the series, while Ellen Burrows collected the president’s award.

Club secretary Tracey Kol said interest in the club had grown over the winter series and planning was now under way for the summer series which will be held over January.

She said the club has had early talks with Flagstaff Hill  Maritime Village about running its music-on-the-wharf events in conjunction with the runs.

“It’s just something a bit different we are looking at in an attempt to boost both events,” she said.

“We have had a very successful winter series, our membership has grown and there was strong interest in the half-marathon.

“Hopefully holding our summer series in conjunction with the Flagstaff Hill event can have positive impacts for both of us,” she said.
