Owner escapes burning Bessiebelle home

A LARGE weatherboard home at Bessiebelle has been destroyed by fire, with the damage bill tipped to reach $300,000.

Country Fire Authority south-west region duty officer Steve Giddens said the fire was reported just before midnight on Sunday after the owner fled to safety.

“Bessiebelle was dispatched to a house fire at 11.45pm Sunday. On arrival firefighters found the weatherboard property well alight,” he said.

“The owner was on scene and got out of the burning building with basically the clothes on his back.

“Four other CFA units also responded but some had to be turned back because the property could pretty much only be accessed by four-wheel-drive vehicles because it was very wet.”

Mr Giddens said the house was totally engulfed by the fire.

He said the value of the damaged property had been estimated at $300,000.

“The cause of the fire is not suspicious,” Mr Giddens said.
