Journalist wins racing award

THE Standard has backed up its Rural Press Club awards with another gong for one its journalists.

Veteran sports reporter Greg Best took out the Australian Jumping Racing Association’s award for jumping story of the year.

The award went to Best for his story on Awakening Dream’s win in the 2012 Grand Annual Steeplechase, which featured trainer Patrick Payne talking about fighting back tears as he watched the horse’s emphatic victory at Warrnambool.

The awards were presented at the Association’s annual Moss Trooper Fellowship Awards night at Caulfield on Saturday night.

The gala dinner was attended by state racing minister Denis Napthine and other racing dignitaries.
