Warrnambool Rangers misfire when it counts

A MISFIRING Warrnambool Rangers side conceded an extra time penalty to stumble in week one of Ballarat District Soccer Association (BDSA) finals.

The Rangers lost its major semi-final to minor premier Sebastopol 3-2 at Morshead Park under lights after the Vikings converted a penalty in the 118th minute.

Scores were locked 2-2 after 90 minutes, and the match was headed for penalties before Alex McCulloch conceded a foul in the penalty box.

Coach Luke Mackenlay said the Rangers dominated the match but wasted clutch opportunities — including two one-on-one battles with the goalkeeper.

The side will meet Ballarat in a preliminary final this weekend.

“You can’t have this many opportunities and not take them, not against these guys, and we know that,” Mackenlay said.

Defender-turned-striker Lee Hunter netted the Rangers’ two goals in a best afield display.

It was a mixed bag of results for the Rangers’ four teams as BDSA finals got underway at the weekend.

The senior women’s title defence ended with a 2-0 loss against Forrest in a minor semi-final on Saturday.

Club president John Berg said the match was played in terrible conditions.

The under 15s lost their major semi-final against Vic Park 3-1 yesterday.

But the side has a second chance in a preliminary final to Forrest this weekend.

It was better news for the under 17s, who had a thrilling 3-2 extra time win over Ballarat yesterday.
