The Lady Bay port was last dredged in 2009.
EMERGENCY dredging will take place around the Lady Bay boat ramp from today in an effort to improve boat access.
Warrnambool City Council plans to pump up to 8000 cubic metres of sand away from the boat ramp and the breakwater’s lower landing and on to the beach.
The council will use Moyne Shire’s dredge for the project and is negotiating with the Department of Sustainability and Environment and Moyne about dumping the dredged sand on to Port Fairy’s East Beach at a later date.
A council spokesperson said the larger-than-usual sand build-up was caused by June’s wild weather.
The council’s infrastructure services manager Glenn Reddick said the $140,000 project would continue into October but would only cause minor disruptions to access of the boat ramp and lower landing.
The funding for the dredging will come from state government’s Department of Transport.
The Port of Warrnambool was last dredged in 2009 when 45,000 cubic metres of sand was removed from an area towards the middle of the bay.
