The new program begins at SEAL next week under the instruction of martial arts expert Heather Stewart.

Ms Stewart said the sessions would focus on defence techniques, as well as increasing women’s awareness.

“Things like going to your car of an evening time, things like how you place your keys, how you walk, making sure you’re in light, just general safety things,” she said.

“There was a woman in Frankston who actually was able to free herself from an attempted rape, she had some martial arts training, which probably saved her,” she said.

“The principles of martial arts are really to get yourself out of the situation, if you’re aware and all you have to do is break free and run, that can save someone.”

Four weekly sessions will be held at SEAL in Hyland Street beginning at 7pm next Wednesday.

“We’re looking at general awareness, what positions people put themselves into and obviously being aware of those and avoiding them,” Ms Stewart said.

“We’ll do a few techniques as well over the four weeks against a grab, or an oncoming punch, a kick or a choke.”

Ms Stewart has studied Kenpo karate in Melbourne and overseas and taught martial arts to people of all ages. If there is enough interest, SEAL also hopes to introduce daytime sessions.

“There’s been a bit in the media of late with women’s safety, it’s a really big thing at the moment,” Ms Stewart said.

“I hope it gives women a bit of knowledge and a bit of confidence, that if something did happen they could have a go, but obviously the aim is prevention.”
