Maher said yesterday he was happy with Srikandi’s performance after she missed the start by two lengths before running eighth at her last outing.
“It’s the first time she has done that in her career,” Maher said.
“Srikandi normally jumps running — it was just a mystery to me that she missed the kick in the BTC Cup.
“I’m prepared to forget her last run. I’m pretty confident she will not do that again.
“She worked really well with Andy Kermond in the saddle on Tuesday morning.
“We galloped her over 1000 metres and she worked home hard over the last 600 metres. The work has tightened her up for today’s race.”
The 33-year-old trainer accepted with the last-start Warrnambool winner Heavy in an $80,000 restricted race over 2000 metres at Randwick today.
He also has Top Sight, Duibio and Jileks Spur running at Flemington.
“It’s going to be a big day for the stable with runners in three states. I’m very lucky because I’ve got such great staff,” Maher said. “I’m hoping all the runners can run well.”
Warrnambool trainer Daniel Bowman saddles up Lucky For You in the $120,000 Straight Six over 1200 metres at Flemington.
Bowman concedes it’s a big jump in class for the last-start Warrnambool winner.
“I thought his last start win at Warrnambool was very good,” he said. “It’s a massive jump in class today but there were no suitable races around and I had to get him ready for the Golden Topaz at Swan Hill next month so I had to give him a hit-out.
“I reckon if we happened to get a really wet track he may be a rough place hope.”
Darren Weir’s Warrnambool satellite stable has May’s Dream, Lake Sententia, Flying Hostess and Honourable Aussie running at Flemington.
