Police tactical intelligence operative Senior Constable Rebecca Miles, of the Warrnambool crime investigation unit, said officers were conducting an investigation into alleged illegal activity by registered sex workers in the Warrnambool district.
She said a previous operation resulted in the arrest of workers and a male client being located in compromising circumstances when police searched an address leased for the purposes of operating an illegal brothel.
Senior Constable Miles said a number of new complaints and information relating to the south-west’s sex industry had been received by police.
“Workers can only visit clients at their home, or accommodation paid and booked under the client’s name,” she said.
“Any accommodation or venue booked or being utilised by a registered sex worker is classed as a brothel and therefore is illegal unless a specific licence is held.”
Senior Constable Miles said there were no legal brothels in Warrnambool.
Anyone with information about illegal activities is asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
