Police who stopped to help a motorist whose car had conked out in Melbourne's south-east early this morning were surprised to find a sawn-off shotgun under his seat.
But the stranded motorist told police he had just purchased the vehicle 15 minutes before the officers came to his aid on Thompsons Road in Cranbourne about 1.30am.
A Victoria Police spokeswoman said officers approached the vehicle, which had stalled on the side of the road, and began speaking to the 32-year-old driver.
However they saw an ice pipe sticking out of the Cranbourne man's front pocket, and decided to search his car.
The spokeswoman said the officers found a sawn-off shotgun under the front passenger's seat, which the driver claimed was not his as he had only purchased the vehicle minutes earlier.
Detectives are questioning the man over firearms offences this morning. No charges have been laid.
