Merrivale premiership player Jet Dowie, boom Allansford recruit Brenton Webster and Dennington spearhead Chris Keilar have withdrawn, leaving selectors with 30 players to choose from for Saturday’s one-off AFL Victoria Country Championships clash in Morwell.
Keilar (ankle) is sidelined with injury and Webster has university commitments.
Dowie, whose 2013 season was ruined by a knee complaint, is using the bye weekend to rest.
The Tiger spearhead leads Warrnambool and District’s goal-kicking table with 46 after slotting 14 majors against Timboon Demons on Saturday.
Webster has kicked 26 majors after crossing from Hampden league club North Warrnambool Eagles and Keilar has 14 goals to his name.
Lewis conceded the omissions were disappointing but is pleased with the calibre of players still in contention.
The Warrnambool and District league will train tonight and Thursday at Mack Oval and take a squad of 24 to Morwell.
“At the end of the day you are happy to take away a group of people who are keen and want to have a crack and are there for the cause,” Lewis said.
He said Justin Wallace, coming off a 10-goal haul for Dennington, Merrivale key position pair Rhys Raymond and Manny Sandow and Kolora-Noorat’s Paul McSween were forward options in line for an interleague berth.
He said he believed the league had the nucleus of a dangerous attack and was also content with its defensive stocks, labelling them “rock solid”.
