The Blues put their home-court advantage to good use on Saturday to defeat Allansford 46-45.
The result left the game’s winner and loser with 3-4 records from the opening seven rounds and among a cluster of teams still with genuine finals hopes.
The barest of winning margins showed there is little between the teams, although the momentum of the game swung wildly throughout.
Nirranda was in a hurry early and led by four goals at the first break before the Cats wrestled back control over the next two quarters to lead by six goals at the final huddle.
While the Cats were favoured to go on with the job, the Blues found another gear and charged to produce a stunning last quarter to snatch victory.
Nirranda coach Anna Murnane praised her team for their tenacity.
“The girls kept their heads up and dug deep and didn’t give up,” Murnane said.
“We are just taking it week by week and looking to keep on improving each game.”
Murnane praised the efforts of goals shooter Jo Couch, her twin sister Lisa Couch in the centre and wing attack Kristy Ludeman.
Meanwhile, Old Collegians maintained their spotless record with a 45-39 win over Panmure.
An upset was brewing at half-time with Panmure leading 22-21 before the Warriors took control to lead 35-31 at the final change.
They extended this to a 10-goal margin at games end with Rachel Alderson in the centre driving the Warriors to victory.
For the Bulldogs, Eleanor Wright was brilliant with 33 goals while Kirsty Williams was a good contributor at goal defence.
Dennington remains in second place on the ladder after a comfortable 55-44 win over Deakin University.
It was a day for the Burt girls to shine with Katie shooting 36 goals for the winners and Melissa the same amount for the Sharks.
A 34-goal haul from Penny Smith helped steer Kolora-Noorat to a 52-32 win over South Rovers.
And Russells Creek advanced to sixth spot on the ladder thanks to a 48-26 win over East Warrnambool.
Briana and Tara Eccles were the stars for the Kangaroos while coach Aimee Drew was the Bombers’ best.
