They are “actively pursuing” the Office of Public Prosecutions to appeal against the leniency of the penalty.
Kyle Cobby, 22, pleaded guilty in the Hamilton Magistrates Court last week to false imprisonment, making threats to kill and two counts of intentionally causing injury.
He was sentenced to 103 days in jail and will have to undertake a 16-month community corrections order when he is released.
He had already spent 13 days in custody so has to serve three months.
Victoria’s peak domestic violence organisation labelled the three-month jail term given to a Cobby, who hog-tied his heavily pregnant partner, as “outrageous”.
Cobby’s 21-month-old son also suffered about 60 unexplained bruises which an expert said were not caused accidentally.
In sentencing, magistrate John Lesser said it was one of the worst examples of this sort of offending.
The charges related to incidents in January when Cobby tied up his 37-weeks’ pregnant partner before she eventually escaped with their child to a neighbour.
She heard Cobby slapping their son, and in a recorded interview with police, Cobby openly threatened to kill his partner.
Domestic Violence Victoria CEO Fiona McCormack said the short jail sentence made her blood boil.
“How can this woman and other women feel safe when this happens and there are virtually no consequences?” she said.
