A man in his 60s was involved in an incident with security staff at the Whalers Hotel about midnight was interviewed by Warrnambool police detectives on Friday morning.
Police said it was believed the man's son was being escorted from the hotel when a scuffle broke out between the son and crowd controllers.
The father then intervened and may have been holding a glass or stubbie at the time.
He was arrested, lodged in the cells and is now being interviewed by Warrnambool police crime investigation unit detectives.
Police are seeking witnesses to the incident and video footage is still in the process of being viewed.

Warrnambool police Sergeant Cameron Ross said there were four people lodged in the cells for being drunk overnight.
"There was a lot of people out socialising and generally almost everyone was very well-behaved," he said.
Traffic police were kept busy across the south-west during the three-day carnival period, breath-testing more than 2000 drivers.
Police said 10 drivers were detected under the influence of drugs and one drink driver.
Police were quick to point out that none of the drivers under the influence of drugs or alcohol were going to or coming from the races and were picked up during a three-day blitz which coincided with the carnival.
