Darren Weir’s five-year-old grey ($10) scored by five lengths over 1400 metres, from Aaron Purcell’s Shysta ($11) with Jarrod McLean’s Let’s Be A Star ($6.50) third.
The win gave Rawiller his 23rd flat win at the carnival, overtaking Camperdown icon Neville Wilson. Coincidentally, his 22nd win was in a race named after Wilson. Rawiller, 36, said Wilson was “probably the most liked person in racing, certainly of the jockeys”.
“He’s a hero of mine, Neville Wilson. It’s certainly a surprise and a pretty fair honour,” Rawiller said. “He’s just a legend of the turf.”
Distant Dreams gave Rawiller his third win of four for the 2015 carnival, all for Weir. He rode three winners in 2014, four in 2013 and four in 2012.
Weir said the mare was “a great little wet tracker” who had trialled well entering the carnival.
