The Cobden export recommitted to Essendon yesterday, tying him to the club until the end of the 2018 AFL season.
Merrett, 20, has established himself in the Bombers' best 22 since arriving as a promising midfield-half forward via pick 26 in the 2013 national draft.
The creative left-footer played 20 games in his debut season, earning a rising star nomination, and has featured in the first five matches of the 2015 campaign, averaging 20 disposals.
Merrett played in Cobden's 2012 Hampden league grand final loss to Warrnambool before spending a season at TAC Cup Sandringham Dragons where his nous in close, strong tackling and poise catapulted him up the draft calculations.
He quickly settled into life at Essendon, where he plays alongside older brother Jackson.
"My decision to re-sign was based on the fact I believe we have a really tight group who want to achieve success together, we want to play finals and win finals," Merrett said in a statement.
"Essendon is where I want to play my footy.
"We have great coaches and development staff that I believe will provide me with the opportunity to get the best out of myself both on and off the field."
Essendon coach James Hird said Merrett's maturity had been a standout during his 18 months at the club.
"It's hard to believe he's only in his second season of senior football," he said.
"His teammates love having him in the side, and his pressure and hardness in the forward line and midfield make him a vital member of our squad.
"It's young players like Zach who give our fans great hope that the future of our football club is heading in the right direction."
Essendon, sitting ninth with three wins and two losses, plays undefeated Fremantle at Subiaco Oval on Saturday night.
