Pearcedale trainer Jason Thompson has trained and at times bought some of the best Australian greyhounds in the past 15 years, including Black Magic Opal, El Galo and Ronan Izmir.
Yesterday he rated the Macey’s Bistro Warrnambool Classic (450m) popular elect as the most exciting young sprinting prospect in the nation.
“Today pre-race with her having box one for the $75,000-to-win classic she’s worth $200,000,” he said, claiming she was not only valued at the same price as a new Maserati but in greyhound terms had a motor to match the sleek Italian super car.
“On a good day she would be worth $250,000. After the race, win, lose or draw, she’s worth $150,000. Pups out of her first litter would sell for $10,000 each. She’s young but if she fulfils her potential they could be worth a lot more.
“Shared Equity is a very valuable commodity. She’s got unlimited potential and there’s no doubt she will run 500 metres. She’s very, very good,” he said.
Anakie trainer Angela Langton said her kennel star had pulled up well after a 10-length semi-final win.
“She’s as good as gold,” she said.
“I couldn’t believe it when she drew box one for the final. It’s a nice draw. If she can get a good break it’ll be catch her if you can.”
Langton said Shared Equity was improving every start.
“First time at Sandown she broke 30 straight off, but she didn’t show the early pace she has now. She’s anticipating the start now,” she said.
Shared Equity is likely to start the shortest priced favourite to take out the Classic since her sire Brett Lee won the same race in 2001.
Langton has previously trained classic winners Auf Wiedersehen (2006), Lynlea’s King (2008) and Premier Event (2013). She said they were all blessed with early pace.
If there was going to be an upset tonight, Edithvale sprinter Dewana Result is the only greyhound in the field capable of going stride for stride with Shared Equity.
The Brendan Dewan-trained sprinter has recorded some outstanding times and was only beaten a length by Shared Equity in just outside track record time in the heats.
Shared Equity drifted off the track on the home turn and took Dewana Result’s running, causing the 38kg dog to go wider. There’s no doubt he would have got closer given a clear run.
But Dewana Result can be a bit tardy from the boxes, while Shared Equity comes out like she is on fire.
Former Warrnambool trainer Darren Fisher, now based at Lara, has Cosmic Lilly in the final and she has drawn perfectly in box eight.
If there’s interference on the inside Cosmic Lilly can run a place, while the Kelly Bravo-trained What’s Chewing will also have supporters.
