Active Health Portland chronic disease management practice nurse Pauline McGee said people who were frail and elderly were strongly advised to take the flu vaccination.
“It is becoming more common as people realise the benefits of protecting against winter flu,” she said.
“There is greater awareness. It’s becoming a regular part of the health regime for people.”
Active Health Portland have the flu vaccination available and people can make an appointment by calling 5522 1200.
Warrnambool City Council has also encouraged residents to have the vaccine.
Communications officer Callan McDuff said free vaccines are available for people identified as being at risk, such as people over 65 or people with certain chronic illnesses.
“We would encourage people to get in touch with their GP to organise a flu vaccination,” he said.
“To see if you are eligible for a free vaccine, people should also contact their doctor.”
Vaccine delivery was delayed this year due to a double strain change.
