Jarryd Lewis kicked five goals while onballer Dean Gavin was best-afield in the 15.11 (101) to 11.12 (78) win at Gardens Oval.
They never shook off the gallant Seagulls but increased their lead in the next two terms to be 24 points up at the last change.
The clash was one of two in the Hampden league on Sunday. Elsewhere, Warrnambool made light work of South Warrnambool in a cross-town showdown.
The Blues kicked 10.7 to 1.2 in the final term to run out 20.20 (140) to 6.10 (46) victors. Tim McIntyre kicked five goals and was best-afield.
The two A grade netball matches each delivered one-goal thrillers.
North prevailed against Port Fairy 29-28 while South Warrnambool overcame Warrnambool to win 39-38, despite trailing by two at the last break.
The story was starkly different in the Warrnambool and District league, where the closest margin in the five Sunday football games was 91 points.
Merrivale overcome Panmure 20.18 (138) to 7.5 (47) at Panmure, despite trailing by eight points at quarter-time. Jet Dowie booted 10 goals.
Mark Murphy lifted himself to the top of the goalkicking tally with 10 majors in South Rovers' 20.19 (139) to 7.2 (44) win against Deakin University at the Pond.
Justin Wallace was the star of the show at Dennington, kicking eight goals in the Dogs' 23.16 (154) to 4.7 (31) defeat of East Warrnambool.
Nirranda overcame early inaccuracy - 2.10 in the first term - to see off Russells Creek 18.24 (132) to 4.7 (31) at Mack Oval.
And Allansford did what it had to against Timboon, winning 19.10 (124) to 5.5 (35) after the Demons led by a point at quarter-time.
In the A grade netball, Russells Creek posted its first win with a 54-22 victory against Nirranda. Its only points entering the match were from a draw in round two.
Merrivale marched into the top five with a 45-34 win against Panmure, courtesy of a 14-6 final quarter.
A last-term burst was also the theme for Deakin University, which shot 15-9 to see off South Rovers.
Timboon Demons were too good for Allansford 48-29 while Dennington defeated East Warrnambool 73-18, thanks to 58 goals from Katie Burt.
