However, some are still unsure on the procedure and are paying unnecessarily for tickets.
The trial in Parkers car park off Koroit and Lava streets will continue until June 26 before city councillors vote on the next move.
It is part of a move by the city council to encourage more people to park and walk to their destinations. Parkers car park is 50 to 100 metres from Liebig Street.
During the trial, users are required to scroll through a menu on the ticket machine to select the free option and print the appropriate ticket for display in the vehicle.
“Usage has definitely been building up,” council communications manager Nick Higgins said.
“Early in the week we had 2300 people viewing a video on our website which gives instructions on how to use the parking ticket machine.”
A count of free parking tickets issues so far shows Monday 61, Tuesday 77, Wednesday 151, Thursday 203 and yesterday 183 to 2.45pm.
