The Darren Weir-trained Tall Ship won the feature race at Terang and District Racing Club’s biggest meeting of the year.

Club manager Karen Van Kempen said about 900 people enjoyed the annual race meeting.

“It’s always busy on race day,” she said.

“It was a very cold day, (but) we’ve had a good day overall.”

Mrs Van Kempen said while the favourite took out the cup, it was a closely contested race.

“It was won by a nose,” she said.

The Dan O’Sullivan-trained Tuscan Fire ran second.

Trackside, racing fashion was sleek and elegant, with Millicent’s Helen Varcoe winning the ladies fashions on the field competition.

Ms Varcoe quickly put her outfit together yesterday morning after deciding to drive across the border to watch her horse Letmedowngently run in the cup.

While the horse managed third place, Ms Varcoe beat 13 other women for the best-dressed title.

She said her vintage dress was made in Melbourne by Evie Hill.

“It is pure silk. It’s antique gold, cream and black,” she said.

Ms Varcoe is a milliner, however, her winning headpiece was not from her own collection.

“I bought it about eight years ago in Queensland,” she said.

Melbourne’s Mark McKinnon, formerly from Garvoc, won the best-dressed gent.

Well-known local jockey Neville “Nifty” Wilson led the cup runners out aboard 1992 Melbourne Cup winner Subzero.

He was dressed in Anzac Day commemorative silks.
