Yarra Trams has confirmed the route 59 tram is suspended between Moonee Ponds Junction and Keilor Road as crews work to remove a truck which struck a rail bridge and rolled on Mt Alexander Road in Essendon about 2.30pm.
Buses are replacing trams but commuters are reporting "hundreds" of people are queueing for scarce trams in the CBD.
The driver of the truck had to be freed from the truck's cabin after his arm became trapped when the truck overturned. He was freed nearly an hour later.
The man, aged in his 40s, was taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital suffering minor injuries.
VicRoads advised just before 5pm that Mt Alexander Road remained closed northbound between Shamrock Street and Russell Street. It said drivers should seek alternate routes if travelling through the area.
Metro trains confirmed the Craigieburn line was suspended both directions between Essendon and Broadmeadows. Minor delays were experienced as services resumed.
