Contractors have laid a new concrete route from Drummond Street to the disused line and recent approval from VicTrack will allow the remainder to proceed. It is expected to be ready for the start of the second term of school on April 13.
Yesterday, Warrnambool City councillor Kylie Gaston and Dennington Community Association president David Kelson checked on progress of the $60,000 project which follows a strong local campaign.
“This is not just about connecting the supermarket, it’s about linking north and south Dennington,” Cr Gaston said. “Dennington residents voted with their feet — you can clearly see where people have been walking on an unmade pathway.
“The council used its new small infrastructure fund to allocate $30,000 and leverage another $30,000 from the government.
“It’s a healthy outcome.”
VicTrack told The Standard yesterday it had sent a letter of offer to the council last month to grant licensed access over the rail line and was awaiting a formal response.
“Other community uses would not be viable as the Dennington to Warrnambool rail line is still being used for transport purposes or has been reserved for future transport purposes,” VicTrack’s senior communications and government relations advisor Jason Murray said.
