Warrnambool City Council has approved a planning permit for the redevelopment and the centre is expected to be completed by the end of 2015.
Mpower chief executive officer Kerry Nelson said the property opposite the support service’s offices on Koroit Street would provide respite for children with disabilities.
“We badly needed a place of our own,” she said.
“There will be four bedrooms and a large open-plan living area for activities, as well as a play area and parking outside.”
The site was purchased with funds from Mpower reserves and a $100,000 donation from patron Geoff Handbury.
The community is being asked to help fund the special redevelopment project.
It is hoped to raise $750,000.
“All money and gifts will be utilised for the new centre to provide assistance to individuals and families in south-west Victoria who are living with disabilities,” Ms Nelson said.
Draft plans for the layout of the house are nearing completion following consultation with managers of disability and early intervention programs who have considered the needs of Mpower’s client base.
“We see it as a community asset,” Ms Nelson said.
“We don’t have any other place like this in the community.”
