For the first time in nearly two decades Manifold Street is at the centre of major streetscape works, with Colac contractors R. Slater and Son setting up base near the town’s clocktower.
The main focus is on pedestrian safety improvements.
Pedestrian outstands are being upgraded in Manifold Street and Little Manifold Street between Bath and Pike streets.
Other works include footpath upgrades along the northern side of Little Manifold Street (between Church and Pike streets) and to the area in front of the post office.
Pedestrian outstands along the southern side of Manifold Street (between Cressy and Pike streets) will also be upgraded. The footpath in front of the courthouse is another area to be improved.
Other elements of the original design have had to be put on hold after tenders for the work came in $310,000 over budget.
Council allocated $250,000 to the project in its 2014/15 budget and the former state government contributed $300,000 late last year.
Central ward councillor Ruth Gstrein said the project should be completed by June.
