The former Melbourne Demon limped from the field during the Hampden league’s pre-season competition at Friendly Societies’ Park on Saturday.
Nicholson, 24, had scans on his left foot in Warrnambool, which were then sent to his doctor in Melbourne.
The midfielder, whose clean ball use was a feature in the Seagulls’ two round-robin games before he was injured, said it was the first time he’d had an issue with his feet.
“I am not 100 per cent sure at this stage (what it is),” he said yesterday.
“I will head to Melbourne tomorrow to get it checked out properly.”
Nicholson said he felt “a bit of contact and went over on it” against South Warrnambool.
He immediately made his way to the Port Fairy bench.
“I am on crutches as a precaution to make sure I don’t make it any worse,” he said.
Nicholson joined Port Fairy in November — just two months after Melbourne delisted him following four seasons and 32 games in the AFL system.
He will work alongside Seagulls coach Brett Evans as an assistant this season and is excited about the Gardens Oval-based club’s chances.
“It’s going really well,” Nicholson said.
“We’ve got a lot of talented young kids there and it’s just a case of getting bigger bodies around them to help them out.
“Boag’s Cup was a good hitout but it’s just a matter of one step at a time.”
Port Fairy kick-starts its Hampden league season against Portland at Hanlon Park on April 18.
