Mr Powell was 15 kilometres from Hamilton on Saturday night when he had the misfortune of running into a marsupial, knocking him to the ground.
The kangaroo had just been hit by a vehicle before it careered into the path of Mr Powell, who was riding with the Headspace-Brophy-South West Healthcare team.
“I was very lucky, lost a bit of skin but that’s all,” Mr Powell said.
His bicycle helmet, however, was less fortunate. A significant crack was apparent on the outside of the headwear and the inner lining also damaged.
Mr Powell was taken to Hamilton Base Hospital following the incident after feeling a little dizzy but was discharged after less than four hours.
“I was a bit dazed after it happened but I was fine by morning,” he said.
The avid cyclist completed the final leg from Hamilton to Port Fairy and received a few light-hearted comments upon his arrival.
“These things happen,” he said.
“Thankfully, it all turned out OK considering what could have happened.”
