Joe McLaren will coach the Bottle Greens’ under 18 side — a team which will play a curtain-raiser to his brother Chris’ senior outfit in Warrnambool in May.
“It’s great Chris got the senior job,” he said.
“He really wanted it and the under 18 job came up and I spoke to (league chief executive) Mike Farrow and it went from there.”
Joe McLaren has coached Koroit’s under 18½ side the past two seasons and is involved with TAC Cup club North Ballarat Rebels’ summer program in the south-west.
The Koroit premiership player said the Bottle Greens’ role gave him another chance to further his junior coaching repertoire.
“I am rapt to get the job and am looking forward to working with the kids and getting to know a bit more about them,” McLaren said.
“When you play (seniors) at 2pm you don’t get to know many kids so it will be a good opportunity for me.”
McLaren hopes to unveil a squad soon, with training to follow for the May 23 fixture.
“Some kids develop later than others in regards to footy,” he said. “Some might not have played schoolboys footy but they might get a run in this side.”
