New features include a large bluestone rock from a local paddock shaped to fit snugly on the site and a brass plaque bearing part of the remembrance ode.
A replica of the historic honour roll hanging in the nearby hall has also been mounted on the monument and a second flag pole erected. Then on Anzac Day a new Lone Pine, struck from one of the original cones brought back from Gallipoli by Aussie soldiers, will be planted during a ceremony attended by three World War II veterans and local primary school pupils whose forebears fought in World War I.
“We’ll have a piper instead of a bugler and children will sing the national anthem,” said local resident Ian Wallace who has been completing the memorial renovations along with Reg Dumesny.
“Panmure has a double-sided monument with one side devoted to the Ash Wednesday fires and the other side a memorial for soldiers.”
The service starts at 2pm with a march from the fire station before unveiling of the honour roll plaque and new monument and the tree planting.
