Police say two cars, including a luxury Mercedes, may have been drag racing on a major inner-suburban road before a five-car crash that put three people in hospital last night.
Police at the scene said the cars were travelling as fast as 200km/h in a 60km/h zone on Maribyrnong Road, Ascot Vale, when the crash happened just before 10.30pm.
They said the Mercedes sedan and dark-coloured car, reportedly another Mercedes, were travelling east on Maribyrnong Road near near Canterbury Street when a red sedan pulled in front the speeding vehicles. The impact left the Mercedes on its roof and two parked cars damaged.
The second speeding vehicle left the scene.
The driver and a passenger on the silver Mercedes were taken to The Alfred hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
The driver of the red sedan was taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital.
