The teenage superfish earned champion boy and girl honours at the Greater Western Region swimming championships at AquaZone yesterday.
Each tallied 50 points for winning five events, William in the 18-20 years boys’ section and Emily in the 14-year girls’ section.
Overall, Emmanuel College emerged as the champion school of the carnival, ahead of Timboon P-12 and Warrnambool College.
Carnival convener Dave Keating said between 150 and 200 students hit the 50-metre outdoor pool in overcast weather.
The competitors came from as far away as Hopetoun, Daylesford and Ballarat. The region stretches from the South Australian border to Colac.
“It was a smoothly-run day. Help from all the schools made it run as smooth as it could and it was fantastic weather,” Keating said.
“It rained all last year. It was a nice change to have sunshine.”
Keating said the winner of each event would head to Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre for state championships on April 15.
He said there was a possibility swimmers from the region would medal at states, taking on the best from Melbourne and country Victoria.
“It’s hard to tell but state finals, we’re one of eight regions. The winner from here goes on and competes against the winners from the other regions,” he said.
“We’ve got some great swimmers in the Greater Western Region. A lot of them are a chance to medal or even win their events.”
