MOUNT GAMBIER’S Daniel Herrewyn kicked off the South West Road Cycling series with a win in Saturday’s Greg Gleeson Memorial handicap at Wangoom.

Herrewyn outsprinted Warrnambool brothers Sam and Matt Lane, who were second and third, to claim victory in the first South West Series event.
Warrnambool Cycling Club president Barry Warren said a strong field of 50 riders entered the 62-kilometre handicap which took in two laps of the Warrumyea circuit.
He said Herrewyn and the Lanes rode off scratch, catching the front markers at the Framlingham bridge with about six kilometres to go.
“Those three got away from the bunch and held on for the sprint finish,” Warren said.
“Brian McNamara was fourth and John Pearson won the bunch sprint to finish fifth.”
Warren said the hilly course was better suited to the scratchmen and the early markers did well to hold them off until the final six kilometres.
He said 27 riders contested the junior race.
On Sunday Natasha Cross took out the Warrnambool Veterans Cycling Club South West Credit Brennan/Hall Memorial Race.
Cross was one of 100 riders in the handicap race on Sunday.
Riding her first open event, off 29 minutes, Cross rode most of the race on her own. She finished the race about 30 seconds ahead of the chasing group of 10, with Warrnambool riders Andy Graham and Richard Adams rounding out the top three.
Scratch rider Darren Roberts from the Northern Veterans club took the fastest time prize, with a time of one hour and 22 minutes.
