In a set of results unlikely to be replicated for years to come, all four matches during the division one finals series ended with one-shot margins.
Heytesbury Honeys defeated Koroit Hornets 16-15 in the grand final at Warrnambool Stadium on Monday.
That thriller came a week after they beat Cudgee Cats 17-16 in the preliminary final. The two semi-finals were likewise tight.
Koroit Hornets edged out Heytesbury Honeys 13-12 while Cudgee Cats shaded Koroit Hi-Fives 23-22.
Continuing the theme of thrillers, Koroit Bombers defeated Cudgee Pumas 21-20 in the division two grand final, also on Monday.
Heytesbury Honeys skipper Allen Armistead said he was amazed by the unlikely results in finals.
“I played in three finals and every game was decided by one shot,” he said.
“We lost the second semi-final by one shot, won the preliminary final by one shot and won the grand final by one shot.
“They were great games of bowls, the three of them. They could’ve gone either way. We were lucky to be in front in them.”
Armistead, who played alongside Maria Van Someren, Gordon Weller and Norma Weller, said the grand final was a see-sawing affair.
“At the halfway point we were 11-5 down, after 11 ends. With two ends to go we were four shots up,” he said.
“We did two shots on the second-last end, then on the last end we were one shot down and I didn’t have to play my last bowl.” He was appreciative IBW officials allowed them to enter the summer season. The team is a regular in the Heytesbury competition during winter.
“We wanted to play indoor bowls over the summer. They were kind enough to let us put a team in,” Armistead said.
“One of my team members had played over there before, that’s how it all came about. We put a team in thinking we’d have some fun.
“After the first game, we got beaten by 30 shots. The grand final was the last thing we thought we’d play in.”
