INTERNATIONAL Women’s Day celebrations began early in Warrnambool with 140 people attending a gala dinner at the Quality Suites Deep Blue on Saturday night.

A special feature of the event was the presentation of two inaugural “unsung” awards to Del Clapp, an inaugural and 30-year member of the Emma House Domestic Violence Committee, and Peter’s Project founder Vicki Jellie.
Feminist writer and broadcaster Clementine Ford was guest speaker at the event, organised by the Warrnambool International Women’s Day Alliance.
Organiser Deb Nicholson said Ms Ford was quite controversial and “dropped a few F-bombs” which caused a few murmurs in the audience, but also meant she was “hitting the right note” about feminist issues.
Ms Nicholson said the dinner was a sell-out.
“We were absolutely thrilled with the night.”
She said the alliance went to a great deal of effort to make the dinner as inclusive as possible to disadvantaged sections of the community, with concession and free tickets made available to those who needed them.
