The makers of the classic board game — originally with London’s top streets and avenues — are preparing to release a world edition with a twist.
Instead of streets, players will collect stamps in their passport for all of the places they visit, and south-west Victoria has an opportunity to be one of them.
From today until March 9 people can vote for their city to be the wildcard entry and join 22 of the world’s most prominent locations on the board.
Warrnambool mayor Michael Neoh said he would encourage any resident interested to push the city’s name on to the board.
“Why not? I think Warrnambool is worth getting a place on the board,” Cr Neoh said.
“As long as we’re at the higher-price end of the board, the blue end. We should take the place of Mayfair or Park Lane.”
Port Fairy is no stranger to international attention with locals claiming it deserves a chance card.
In 2012, the seaside town was voted the world’s most liveable small community (centres with a population of under 20,000) in the UN-recognised LivCom award.
Titled Monopoly Here and Now, the world edition will be released in September to mark the board’s eight decades of sales.
Residents are encouraged to head online to www.votemonopoly.com and vote for Warrnambool, Port Fairy or another south-west town to be included.
Votes can also be shared on social media by using the hashtag #VoteMONOPOLY.
