Once an ordinary grey brick wall, it’s now adorned with a bright mural which reflects the cultures of the young people who call The Foyer home.
Young people drove the project, with guidance from local artists Nathan Pye and Jim Sargent, who helped teach the multicultural residents.
The Foyer staff member Chrissie Duncan said the young people came up with the mural’s theme after a brainstorming session.
“The wall was ugly and leaked white stuff, so we thought we could make it better and jazz it up a bit,” she said.
“The young people had an idea to include the national flags of all the people who live here, but then someone came up with the idea to use native animals from each country.”
Animals from Australia, the Philippines, the United States, Africa, Ireland and New Zealand are all depicted in the mural which also includes The Foyer’s mantra “Live, Learn and Earn”.
“It really shows the potential these young people have, to come up with such a brilliant theme and then to drive the whole thing to completion is just lovely to see,” she said.
Ms Duncan said the Warrnambool City Council youth development team and Barwon Youth provided support to the project.
“We think it brightens up the courtyard and is really eye-catching. It looks brilliant.”
