Akira Kurosawa's loose 1985 adaptation of King Lear turns the protagonist into a ruthless but ageing warlord (Tatsuya Nakadai) in 16th-century Japan. The most expensive film of Kurosawa's career, it is slow, ritualistic, and strikingly composed, making especially effective use of mountain landscapes as a counterpoint to the human world of bloody, futile struggle. 2. ALL ABOUT EVE (138 minutes) PG

Artifice is all in Joseph L. Mankiewicz's campy, brittle, highly enjoyable 1950 tribute to actors and acting, with Bette Davis as an ageing theatre diva, Anne Baxter as her younger rival, and George Sanders as a cynical critic (is there any other kind?) who views the dramas on and off stage with languid amusement. 3. L'UDIENZA (111 minutes) Unrated 15+

The anarchist provocateur Marco Ferreri (La Grande Bouffe) was active as a writer-director for almost four decades, yet outside Italy only a few of his films are well known. This rarely screened 1972 farce stars the pop singer and comic Enzo Jannacci as a hick who comes to Vatican City seeking a personal audience with the Pope. Screens as part of a season of films about Rome. Digitally projected. ACMI, tomorrow, 4pm.

4. THE SLAP THAT CAME FROM PARADISE (98 minutes) Unrated 15+

Long before Christos Tsiolkas gave Australians something to fight about at barbecues, there was Alekos Sakellarios's breezy 1959 comedy about a young teacher (Dimitris Papamichael) at an elite girls' school, who causes havoc when he slaps an especially forward student (Aliki Vougiouklaki), a scenario that probably looks more provocative now than it did then. 5. KILLER KLOWNS FROM OUTER SPACE (86 minutes) M

Stephen Chiodo's colourfully designed 1988 B-movie parody does a thorough job of exploiting the sinister possibilities suggested by its title, incorporating deadly fairy floss, extra-terrestrial popcorn, a labyrinthine spaceship disguised as a circus big top, and an especially creepy scene involving shadow puppetry.
