Drink driver will be caught and prosecuted to the full extent of the law, says Warrnambool police Sergeant David McDonald.
A 35-YEAR-OLD Merrivale man who tried to drive home after crashing into a pole has blown more than five times the legal alcohol limit - .273.
Warrnambool police Sergeant David McDonald said police were called to a single vehicle accident just before midnight this morning when a man collided with a pole near the intersection of Duirs Street and Merrivale Drive.
When police officers arrived about midnight they saw damage to the pole.
"Soon after the accident the man has driven from the accident scene. Witnesses followed the vehicle and told police he drove into Silesia Court," he said.
"Police were able to follow the driver due to gouge marks in the road from a damaged tyre. The man was found still in the vehicle."
Sergeant McDonald said the driver then undertook a preliminary breath test which returned a positive reading.
"He then accompanied police back to the station for an evidentiary breath test. That test returned a reading of .273," he said.
"The man was released and is expected to be charged on summons with exceeding the prescribed concentration of alcohol, careless driving and other driving offences."
Pending the issue of the summons charges the man will appear in the Warrnambool Magistrates Court on a date to be fixed.
Sergeant McDonald said the driver returned an extreme blood alcohol reading.
"Obviously it's a very high reading," he said.
"If you drink and drive you will be caught and prosecuted to the full extent of the law. It's very disappointed people still they can drink and drive," he said.
A Mount Gambier truck driver has suffered head injuries in a rollover this morning along the Drik Drik Road at Winnap.
The accident happened about 3.15am. Both lanes were blocked and soon after the accident it was reported that petrol was leaking from the truck.
Heavy haulage arrived at the accident scene about 8.15am.
