Creek defeated Port Fairy by 37 runs at Allansford’s McLean Oval yesterday to add another piece of silverware to an extensive trophy cabinet.
The decider was a repeat of the same match 12 months ago, which it won. The club also claimed two of the three junior flags on offer last season.
Coach Andrew Thomson said he was pleased his teenagers could extend the club’s dominance of the WDCA junior ranks.
“It was a disciplined performance. It wasn’t startling but they did everything they needed to, to give themselves the best possible chance to win the game,” he said.
“Everyone contributed with the bat and everyone contributed with the ball. It was just very disciplined.”
Creek won the toss, batted and reached 7-144 from its 20 overs. Connor MacLeod (24) and Brad Hunt (26) top scored and added 46 for the seventh wicket.
Port Fairy lost two early wickets in reply, including opening batsman Travis Parsons for two, and was always behind the run rate thereafter.
Ben Heard (30) and Kaine Mercovich (28) shared in the only decisive partnership, 60 for the fourth wicket, as the Pirates finished at 7-107.
“It was sort of an even contribution all the way down. We had eight batsmen bat and only one didn’t make double figures,” Thomson said.
“Everyone went out with really positive intent. But Brad Hunt and Connor MacLeod were excellent late.”
Thomson said Creek had used midweek training sessions to get in an aggressive frame of mind for the Twenty20 grand final.
“It was a very interesting exercise the last three training sessions,” he said.
“I said to them ‘what I want you to do is hit straight and if you get a ball on your pads or outside off, you’re allowed to have a swat at it’.
“It showed us some technical deficiencies in relation to being able to play aggressive cricket. It was a good way to get the boys back into it.”
The WDCA under 17 regular season resumes after the Christmas break tonight.
