CITY MEMORIAL Red skipper Kevin McMahon believes his side’s 123-shot thumping of Mortlake Blue could be a Western District Bowls Division record.

The 2013-14 grand finalist dislodged Koroit Blue atop the ladder after producing a mammoth 168-45 round 14 triumph on Saturday.
McMahon (50-9), David Wells (47-9), Kevin O’Keeffe (34-12) and Alan Bell (37-15) put in dominant displays in the clean-sweep win.
“To my recollection, in the 33 years I’ve been involved, it’s the biggest score I have ever seen in bowls in Warrnambool,” he said.
“It’s abnormal for four rinks to win by a big margin.
“It was disappointing for Mortlake; they are trying hard and normally they’re hard to beat on their home track.
“We went there with trepidation ... but we jumped them and went from there.”
City Memorial Red is now one point clear with 172 in first place with four rounds to play.
But it plays second-placed Koroit Blue (171), third-placed Warrnambool Gold (167) and fourth-placed Port Fairy Reed (133) on the run home.
“Other years the double chance has been automatic for Warrnambool and City Red and this year Koroit put its toe in the pond and we’ve all had to fight for it,” McMahon said.
“We have to play both Koroit (Blue) and Warrnambool (Gold) which is interesting.
“We play Koroit at our ground which has a distinct advantage because it’s different to their track.”
In other round 14 fixtures, Port Fairy Red might be left to rue a 100-84 loss to Warrnambool Gold.
But fifth-placed City Memorial Gold missed a chance to put pressure on Port Fairy Red.
Warrnambool White secured a 104-92 win against City Memorial Gold, playing on its Cramer Street rinks, to hinder the latter’s finals quest.
Sixth-placed Terang Green crept over the line against Dennington Red 100-96, Warrnambool Blue claimed a 105-79 triumph over Lawn Tennis Red and Koroit Blue had to work hard for its 102-86 win over Timboon Gold.
