Williams allowed Gold Medals’ time to settle in the early stages of the 2040-metre race before coming from last at the 650-metre mark to snatch victory over Gingerboy and The Ruffian in the shadows of the winning post.
Bill Wilde, deputising for his son Symon who trains the five-year-old, said the owners had floated the idea of Gold Medals running in the Hobart and Launceston cups next month after the victory.
“We were pretty pumped after the win. A few of the owners suggested we take him to Tassie for the Hobart and Launceston cups,” he said.
“Both Tassie races are over 2400 metres. I’ve got no doubt he will run a solid 2400 metres but we will not make any decisions just yet.”
The respected horseman admitted he had a few dollars on the galloper but his betting was not behind the massive plunge on Gold Medals which saw his price shorten from $9 to $5.50 in the last few minutes of waging.
“I thought he had some chance. I was not really confident,” he said. “I’ve got no idea where all the money came for him. I was really worried about his wide barrier.
“Williams got him into a good rhythm which suited him. Gold Medals appears to love running at Moonee Valley. He’s had three starts there for two wins.
“He loves getting back and rolling forward off the camber of the home turn. He’s got an explosive finish when that happens.”
Gold Medals, a $30,000 purchase by Wilde at the 2011 New Zealand Select Yearling Sale, has won more than $150,000 in stakemoney for his connections.
Wilde’s good run continued yesterday when Jahan took out the $15,000 Great Western Cup. Two runs ago, Jahan won last year’s Penshurst Cup on Boxing Day.
Meanwhile, Darren Weir’s Warrnambool satellite stable produced two winners on the nine-race program.
Priority Road notched up back-to-back Moonee Valley wins when he took out a benchmark 78 race while Scarlet Billows took her record to four wins from 10 starts following her victory in a fillies and mares race over 1200 metres.
