Daffy’s stable foreman, former top jockey Neville “Nifty” Wilson, said Sabres’ fitness had improved over recent weeks.
“He needed those first couple of runs. He’s tightened up a lot since his last run in stronger company at Flemington,” Wilson said.
“He won a jump-out at Terang last week. That effort sees him near peak fitness.
“Sabres’ best efforts are in races around 1400 metres but he’s got to be hard to beat in this race as it’s a big drop in class to what he has contested at his recent runs.”
Wilson said Sea Ghost and Overtake loomed as the dangers to Sabres in the feature race on the program.
The first of six races at the non-TAB meeting will start at 1.35pm. The Peter Blank Sprint, to be run over 1125 metres, is scheduled to begin at 4.12pm.
Darren Weir’s tough campaigner Hurdy Gurdy Man chases another feature race win when he runs in the listed $150,000 Bagot Handicap at Flemington.
Hurdy Gurdy Man’s last win was in the 2013 Hamilton Cup but Weir’s Warrnambool foreman Daniel Bowman said the seven-year-old should run well.
“Hurdy Gurdy Man has had a solid preparation. I think his runs are better than they look on paper,” Bowman said.
“He’s in good order and I reckon he will appreciate the 2800 metres of the Bagot.”
Warrnambool trainer John Brooks and Colac mentor Mark Young have runners in the $80,000 two-year-old fillies’ race over 1000 metres at Flemington.
Brooks saddles up Andy Jay, while Young accepted with Dynamic Day.
Blackie returns for Jarrod McLean in the $150,000 Standish Handicap and Symon Wilde has Mannopoly and Hinchley Wood in an $80,000 race over 1400 metres.
