The man was severely injured after the Holden Commodore he was driving collided with a slow moving milk tanker on the Port Fairy-Hamilton Road, at the Kangertong Road intersection, near Broadwater about 7.40pm on Wednesday.
Police believe the man was driving north when he veered into the southbound lane, where the tanker was slowing to turn. The Commodore received extensive damage and the driver had to be cut from the wreckage by the Port Fairy SES crew.
He received head, rib and pelvic injuries and was in a critical condition when he was flown by helicopter to The Alfred hospital.
A hospital spokesman said he remained in a critical, but stable condition yesterday.
The tanker driver was taken to the Warrnambool Base Hospital with chest and shoulder injuries.
