Paramedics were called to Percy Cerutty Oval just before 8pm on Thursday, where 44 people, including six children, had been celebrating during the afternoon.

"As many as 34 of those suffered nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea while at the party," Ambulance Victoria paramedic team manager Brendan Keane said.

"About 22 of those made their way home before paramedics were called to assess 12 others who were still at the party."

Mr Keane said several partygoers who had gone home later called triple-0, including a man aged in his 30s who was taken to Frankston Hospital in a stable condition.

Others who were ill spoke to paramedics over the phone and did not require an ambulance, he said

Mr Keane said the incident was a timely reminder of the importance of maintaining proper food hygiene.

"With lots of barbecues and parties over the holidays it's important for people to take some simple food handling precautions to reduce the chances of food poisoning," he said.

"There's information available on the Better Health Channel website."

A Department of Health spokesman said the department had been notified and the local council was investigating the incident.

The food at the party was believed to have been brought by guests, the spokesman said.
