His special gift-giving visit came during the Warrnambool Surf Life Saving Club nippers’ final session before a two-week Christmas break until January 11.
Nippers co-ordinator Dean Kilpatrick said the development program was running well this summer and he expected there could be up to 30 competing in Torquay on January 2.
“Conditions were perfect today,” he said.
“We started back in November and run through until March for the state finals.
“We’re getting an average of 170 and 180 kids at the beach and there are 40 under eight, who are all new.”
Mr Kilpatrick said a shift from Saturday sessions to Sunday had been successful so far.
“There are patrols on Sunday from 10 o’clock so that helps out with water safety.
“It seems to be working really well.”
