More than 1000 people spread out across the Civic Green for the combined churches Christmas carols.
Carols by Candlelight co-ordinator David Hodgens said churches from across the city provided performers to assist with the merriment.
“The weather has been very kind to us, that’s probably why we have so many people here,” Mr Hodgens said. “Last year it was a bit gloomy and windy but this year there’s marvellous summer weather.”
Old favourites such as Joy to the World, Come all Ye Faithful, Little Town of Bethlehem, Once in Royal David’s City, Hark the Herald Angels Sing and Silent Night were belted out with gusto by the choristers.
“We have a real cross-section of the community here. Young people, older people, families, people from all different backgrounds,” Mr Hodgens said.
Fans of festive music can head to Crossley tomorrow for more carols at the town’s St Bridgid’s church.
On television there will be Carols in the Domain from Sydney on Channel Seven tonight at 8.30pm followed by Melbourne’s Christmas Eve tradition of Carols by Candlelight on the Nine Network.
