The statistics tend to agree. Timboon Gold is 11th on the Saturday pennant standings, but has a shot difference of -34.
By contrast the five sides occupying spots six to 10 have more points to their names but far inferior shot differences. When they’ve lost, they’ve lost heavily.
“The bottom four or five teams are all fairly even. It’s just a matter of who gets over the line,” Saunders said. “We’ve only been beaten by a few shots nearly every game we’ve played. We play Warrnambool White tomorrow and we faced them in our very first game this year and got over the line then.”
Saunders puts the frustrating run down to “a bit of bad luck here and there”.
“I know myself, I skip one rink and two or three games back I was leading by 15 or more shots against the top Warrnambool side,” he said. “After lunch we just fell away and got beat by five.”
But the summer hasn’t been all negative for Timboon. Saunders and Arthur Finch are the WDBD pairs champions, while Finch also claimed singles honours. They will take on the best the Corangamite and Far Western competitions have to offer in January in a bid to progress to state level.
