The US has also been forced to make a change for the mixed teams event that will see it start as favourite when it kicks off on January 4 - with John Isner replacing Jack Sock, who has had to undergo hip surgery.

Tsonga, who won the Hopman Cup earlier this year with Alize Cornet, has been struggling for several weeks. He will be replaced by former world number 24 Benoit Paire so he can concentrate on being fit in time for the Australian Open that begins in Melbourne on January 19.

"I'm disappointed I have to withdraw from the Hopman Cup as I was looking forward to returning to Perth to play with Alize," Tsonga said.

"We had a great time there earlier this year, the fans and the atmosphere were unbelievable.

"But a persisting injury to my arm has given me no choice but to withdraw from the event.

"I hope to be back in Perth soon and wish Benoit and Alize the best of luck. I hope they can win another Hopman Cup trophy for France," Tsonga added.

Paire currently has a singles ranking of 118.

While France will slide in Hopman Cup betting, the US team should start favourite with Ilsner teaming up with women's world number 1 Serena Williams.

Williams is a two-time winner of the event (2003, 2008), having won each time he has participated.

Isner also claimed the honour in 2011 while teaming up with Bathanie Mattek-Sands. It will be Isner's fifth appearance at the Hopman Cup.

Isner will make his fifth appearance at Hopman Cup and is eager to get back to Western Australia.

"I always like playing in Perth. It's the perfect start to the year and I always have a great time on and off the court," he said.

"It's not good to hear Jack is battling injury and I hope he gets well soon.

"I've been working hard in my pre-season training and I'm excited to team up with Serena. I hope we can do well."

The French team begins its title defence against Great Britain (Andy Murray and Heather Watson) on January 5, while US kicks off its campaign against Canada the following evening.
