Mr Merrett is back again busking in Liebig Street this month after getting the taste for busking for charity last year.
Last year he busked for Peter’s Project and this year he is tooting his horn for Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Ltd.
Mr Merrett, a former chief executive officer of Warrnambool City Council, said the MS Warrnambool support group had asked him to again blow out some tunes to support local people with the disease of the nervous system.
He is playing a 110-year-old euphonium that he bought from a First World War serviceman who played the instrument in his battalion band while serving on the Western Front in 1916-1918.
Mr Merrett said he learnt to play in a brass band when he was in high school and had resumed the pastime in the past 18 months, building up a repertoire of tunes, including Christmas carols.
He usually plays near the pedestrian crossing in Liebig Street for about 75 minutes each day, which he said was as long as his lips were up to the job.
